Altius Handcrafted Firearms Biathlon Shooting Camp  June 24-28, 2009


This camp is designed for aspiring Biathletes with some experience and their own equipment.  It provides an opportunity for athletes new to Biathlon to learn the fundamentals of rifle fit, shooting position, and race strategy.  It is also available to experienced shooters as an opportunity to review the basics and evaluate and improve their technique.  

The camp is offered and organized by Marc Sheppard of Altius Handcrafted Firearms www.altiusguns.com, the only Biathlon speciality shop in the world and the only Anschutz Factory Service Center for Biathlon.  Get the benefit of Marc's 14+ years of Biathlon competition experience as a Winter and Summer Biathlon competitor and as the Program Director for Summer Biathlon and Team Leader for the Summer Biathlon World Championships Team.

FREE Summer Paddle on Quake Lake hosted by Lava Creek Adventures June 26, 2009


The West Yellowstone Ski Education Foundation would like to welcome all adventurers on a guided kayak tour of Quake Lake Friday, June 26th.  Join board members David Robinson and Peggy Lynn at the boat ramp of Quake Lake just west of the Beaver Creek USFS campground.  Be ready for a 9am departure and count on a great morning exploring this unique body of water just in time for the 50th Anniversary of the Hebgen Lake Earthquake.  WYSEF Summer Adventures are open to everyone and promote physical fitness and appreciation of our natural environment throughout the warm months.  Lava Creek Adventures has generously donated the use of their kayaks for our adventure.  Don’t hesitate and call ahead, only nine kayaks are available.  Shuttles can also be arranged from West Yellowstone leaving at 8:15am. (Lava Creek Adventures 406-646-5145, 406-539-7081, www.lavacreekadventures.com.)  Paddlers with their own kayaks are encouraged to meet us at the boat ramp for a morning paddle you will not soon forget.

Mountain Bike Biathlon June 27, 2009


The 12th Annual Summer Biathlon is offering a new twist this year with a mountain bike biathlon. Everyone is welcome to participate.  You do not have to have any biathlon experience.  Safety class and loaner rifles with ammunition will be available for those without their own.  Participants must have a mountain bike, rental bikes available from local shops.  (Freeheel and Wheel 406-646-7744 and Yellowstone Bicycles 406-646-7815) Helmets are required. 

Two divisions are offered, Match Class (biathletes with their own rifles and experience) and Sport Class (novices).  The race will be 7.5k of mountain bike riding with two shooting bouts, prone and standing.  Athlete gift, prizes in Sport and Match divisions by age groups are included in the registration fee.  This event is sponsored by Altius Handcrafted Firearms and presented by the West Yellowstone Ski Education Foundation.

Biathlon Shooting and Race Clinic offered by Altius Hadcrafted Firearms  June 28, 2009


A running and shooting clinic will be offered by Marc Sheppard of Altius Handcrfated Firearms.  This clinic will involve race preparation techniques, race strategy, and a running and shooting time trial event with 4 shooting bouts.  Participants must have their own rifle for this clinic.

Clinic schedule:

0800-0830       Intro and overview

0830-0900       Zero

0900-1000       Hands on and live-fire race prep drills and exercises

1000-1030       Run and Shoot Time Trial (5km PPSS)

1030-1100       Analysis and Review

Cycle Tour to Old Faithful  September 26, 2009


The tour- fromWest Yellowstone toOld Faithful and back - is 60 miles long. It's a terrific way to wind up a summer of riding and, again this year, a portion of the proceeds from the ride will be donated to the Yellowstone Park Foundation. Fall is a gorgeous time to be inYellowstone - the elk are bugling, the aspens have turned to gold and the thermal areas are relatively free of crowds. Come enjoy the finest season thatYellowstone Park has to offer - ride in the Fall Cycle Tour.

The route starts inWest Yellowstone at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor's Center and followsYellowstone Avenue to the gate ofYellowstone National Park. All tour participants must pay the Park entrance fee ($12 for cyclists) or be able to show yourPark Pass. Annual passes are good for your spouse and minor children only. Once through the gate, the route follows the main road as it winds along theMadison River. At Madison Junction, the route turns right, crosses theGibbon River and climbs up what locals call the "Firehole Hill". This is the only significant climb of the entire ride. Once you get to the top, you follow the main road as it winds along theFirehole River and past several ofYellowstone's most famous thermal areas until you reachOld Faithful. To get back toWest Yellowstone, simply follow the same route in reverse.
